Apple working on iPhone theft prevention technology

Δεν πρόλαβε καλά-καλά να καθίσει η σκόνη από το προχθεσιμό event [με τοiTunes 9, το iPhone OS 3.1 και την προσθήκη στην συνδρομητική υπηρεσία MobileMe της δυνατότητας απομακρυσμένου κλειδώματος του iPhone με ένα Passcode] και μία νέα πατέντα κατοχυρώθηκε από την Apple αυτή την εβδομάδα, η οποία αφορά έναν τρόπο εντοπισμού πιθανής κλοπής του iPhone!

Η πατέντα ονομάζεται “Acceleration-Based Theft Detection System for Portable Electronic Devices” και περιέχει ένα σύστημα ανάλυσης κινήσεων μέσω του επιταχυνσιόμετρου ώστε να προσδιορίζεται η παρουσία ενός κλέφτη. Εάν το σύστημα εντοπίσει πολύ απότομες κινήσεις (όπως αυτές που πραγματοποιούνται κατά την κλοπή), θα αρχικοποιείται ένας συναγερμός.

 

The drive toward miniaturization of electronics has resulted in computer-based systems that are becoming much more portable. Current portable electronic devices such as laptop computers, hand-held devices such as cellular telephones and personal media devices, such as the iPod from Apple Computer, Inc., and even devices such as compact disc players, are sufficiently compact and lightweight as to make them easily movable. Unfortunately, such ease of transport also implies ease of theft. While the rightful owner of a portable electronic device may conveniently transport it almost anywhere, so can a thief.

Χαρακτηριστικά αναφέρει ότι οι παραδοσιακές μέθοδοι πρόληψης κλοπής (όπως π.χ. τα μηχανικά κλειδώματα) είναι ογκώδεις, ενοχλητικές και περιορίζουν την φορητότητα και την λειτουργικότητα της συσκευής. Στο νέο όμως σύστημα θα χρησιμοποιείται το επιταχυνσιόμετρο για τον προσδιορισμό των πιθανών συνθηκών κλοπής:

Typically, theft or other large-scale movement of the device results in an acceleration signal having characteristics different from other events such as shock, impact, nearby machinery, etc. The detected acceleration as a function of time is thus analyzed to determine whether it corresponds to such large-scale movement of the device, rather than an innocuous event such as the impact of a book dropped nearby. If so, an alarm is produced in order to alert others to the theft.

Tο σύστημα που περιγράφεται θα έχει και μεθόδους εντοπισμού λανθασμένων συναγερμών μέσω του “signal conditioning“, φιλτράρισμα δηλαδή των συμβάντων όπως είναι μία ξαφνική πτώση του iPhone.

To avoid false alarms, the system would include a filter for attenuating common acceleration frequencies and “isolating those representative of theft.” The software plays a role in determining if the acceleration data matches a “known acceleration profile characteristic of theft.”

Κι επίσης θα επιτρέπει στον χρήστη να εμφανίζει ένα “visual warning” για τους πιθανούς κλέφτες, που θα τους προειδοποιεί ότι η συσκευή “has an active theft detection system protecting it.”

Τέλος, το παραπάνω σύστημα περιγράφεται και για τα MacBooks (αφού και αυτά έχουν ενσωματωμένο επιταχυνσιόμετρο).

Η πατέντα κατατέθηκε εκ μέρους της Apple στις 20 Μαΐου 2009 από τον Paul J. Wehrenberg of Palo Alto, Calif.
