Ο Geohot πρόσθεσε ένα κομμάτι στο TheiPhoneWiki που εξηγεί πως δουλεύει το jailbreak με purplera1n στο iPhone 3GS.

* purplera1n sends the enter recovery commands using iTunesMobileDevice
* once in recovery(iBoot), it sends the IBoot Environment Variable Overflow exploit
* the exploit adds a “geohot” command to the phone which runs the payload
* the “geohot” command is run, control is now transferred from iboot to the payload
* the purplera1n client is done

Inside payload
* the payload restores the default environment variable ring buffer and saves the environment to nvram(sets auto-boot to true)
* it patches iBoot to load unsigned img3s and not care about the tags
* it loads the purplera1n picture(sent with payload)
* the nor patcher starts
* llb is decrypted, patched, and increased in size to 0×24200. this is the resident 0×24000 Segment Overflow exploit
* a little loader code is put @ 0×20000 in the LLB to load it and fix the stack
* iboot is decrypted, patched
* everything else is read as is
* nor is written back, nor patcher is done
* kernel is loaded, decrypted, and patched
* ramdisk is loaded(sent with payload) and moved to ramdisk region at 0×44000000, patched kernel is tacked on to the end
* patched kernel is booted
* control is now transferred from payload to ramdisk

Inside ramdisk
* launchd is run, all stuff happens here
* /dev/disk0s1 is mounted
* fstab and services are overwritten here to allow disk0s1 writes and afc2 respectively
* Freeze.app is transferred and Freeze.app loader has SUID bit set
* patched kernel is read from end of ramdisk block device and written to filesystem
* ramdisk is done, rebooting…

Ο Saurik μας προειδοποιεί ότι όπως και το unofficial jailbreak 3.0 beta QuickPwn και το purplera1n έχει κάποιες ελλείψεις σε κάποια σημαντικά patches που χρειάζονται για το winterboard κτλ.

Πρώτα να πούμε πάλι ότι το iPhone 3GS σας θα πρέπει να είναι activated!

Θα χρειαστούμε

XP/Vista windows (δεν δουλεύει με windows 7)

Κάντε ένα backup του τηλεφώνου πριν ακολουθήσετε την παρακάτω διαδικασία.

1. Συνδέστε το activated iPhone 3GS σας στο computer και ανοίξτε το purplera1n.exe
2. Στο παραθυράκι που εμφανίζετε κάντε κλικ στο ‘make it ra1n’ και το iPhone 3GS θα μπεί σε restore mode. Περιμένετε μέχρι να κάνει επανεκκίνηση, αν δεν κάνει κρατήστε πατημένα το home και το sleep για να το βάλετε σε restore mode και να κάνετε restore το iPhone, και ξανά προσπαθήστε από το βήμα 1 πάλι.
3. Μετά την επανεκκίνηση του iPhone, θα δείτε μια εφαρμογή που ονομάζεται Freeze με ένα άσπρο icon.
4. Ανοίξτε το Freeze και κάντε κλικ στο Install Cydia (θα χρειαστείτε Internet). Αυτό θα κατεβάσει και θα εγκαταστήσει το Cydia. Μόλις δείτε να γράφει ‘Finished!’, βγείτε πάλι στο SpringBoard (κάντε κλικ στο home). Τώρα έχετε ένα iPhone 3GS jailbroken με Cydia εγκατεστημένο!

Κανονικά δεν φτιάχνω εργαλεία για το κοινό, και καλύτερα να περιμένετε την iPhone dev team να το κάνει. Αλλά παιδιά, τι συμβαίνει και πρέπει να περιμένουμε μέχρι την έκδοση 3.1? Δεν παίζετε έτσι το παιχνίδι. Βγάζουμε κάτι, η Apple κλείνει τις “τρύπες”, αλλά εμείς βρίσκουμε καινούριες. Δεν αξίζει να περιμένουμε γιατί μπορεί να έχουμε βρει την τελευταία “τρύπα” στο iPhone. Τι σημαίνει τελευταία “τρύπα”… δεν παίζουμε golf. Θα βρω μια καινούρια την επόμενη εβδομάδα. Επίσης τα purplera1nyday αρχεία σας, σας δίνουν την δυνατότητα να γυρίζετε πάντα σε επίπεδο jailbreak, οπότε αν τα έχετε είναι μόνο θέμα των εργαλείων που θα χρησιμοποιήσετε.

Make sure you have windows(but not 7), the latest iTunes installed, and an iPhone 3GS with 3.0 firmware. Connect your iPhone normally. Click “make it ra1n”. Wait. On bootup, run Freeze, the purplera1n installer app. Hopefully you’ll figure out what to do from there. Best tutorial gets linked to from purplera1n site. This tool is beta. Make sure to have everything backed up before running. Also if Cydia doesn’t show up after running Freeze, reboot.

Normally I don’t make tools for the general public, and rather wait for the dev team to do it. But guys, whats up with waiting until 3.1? That isn’t how the game is played. We release, Apple fixes, we find new holes. It isn’t worth waiting because you might have the “last” hole in the iPhone. What last hole…this isn’t golf. I’ll find a new one next week. Also your purplera1nyday files ensure that you can always get back to a jailbroken state, so if you have it it’s just a matter of tools.

Note the binary size of purplera1n, it’s smaller than C++ hello world. No 20MB thing that needs to be torrented. And no IPSW to download. This is how jailbreak should be!
