In case you missed it this week, AT&T made both an announcement and a pledge. Official word from the carrier stated that its high-speed HSPA+ data network upgrade will deliver a sorely needed boost to download speeds by the end of this year. According to AT&T, 14.4Mbps download speeds should be available to nearly 250 million Americans as we usher in 2011.
In addition, AT&T’s current 3G network will enjoy a flurry of improvements, like doubling the network’s current speeds. To be sure, this report about the effects of AT&T’s upgrade is far from a rumor. AT&T Operations CEO John Stankey laid out all the gory details at a Reuters function this week, although it’s safe to say that some of the bold claims could ultimately prove to have been somewhat exaggerated.
Steve Jobs has been a lot more active lately in responding to emails sent to his sjobs@apple.com address. While many are simple ‘yes’ or ‘no’ answers to questions and some seem to have been written by marketing executives or other underlings, occasionally Steve gets into it, with longer messages that show his typical sharp style. Friday night’s interchange with Valleywag blogger Ryan Tate is definitely an example of the latter kind.
Tate wrote that he got “ticked off” after watching an Apple commercial that called the iPad a “revolution.” While drinking a cocktail, Tate shot off a short email to the Apple founder and CEO, asking if he thought if Bob Dylan at age 20 would have thought the iPad had anything to do with revolution. He probably expected nothing would come of it; in fact, as he writes, “I didn’t plan to pick a fight with Steve Jobs last night. It just sort of happened.”
In the latest chapter of the “will-they-or-won’t-they” saga surrounding a possible second carrier for the iPhone in the US, a Taiwan electronics industry publication is claiming that Apple has placed an order for ten million CDMA-compatible iPhones. Of the four major US carriers, AT&T and T-Mobile use GSM technology, while Verizon and Sprint’s networks are on the CDMA standard. While rumors about a Verizon iPhone have been floating around for some time, the number of them has increased lately, and they’ve been getting more and more specific.
An Apple patent application that’s recently been revealed suggests that Apple is working on a way for apps and other content to just pop up on your screen when you’re at a certain location: for example, a menu and reservation app for a particular restaurant. There are different types of implementations detailed in the patent – either a local access-point-based model or an online service – that would deliver the content to the mobile device. The technology appears to be tightly coupled to Apple’s new iAd location-based advertising platform, but this patent gives a clearer picture of the kinds of content that could be delivered to users.
The core of the technology would be a matching service that would compare a mobile device’s location (using GPS or other data) to information stored on a server about what custom content is available in that area. The content would be pushed to the device when the user was in a pre-defined area.
Apple is reportedly working on integrating a number of Facebook features into iPhone OS 4.0, which is expected to be released with the fourth-generation iPhone at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in San Francisco next month. Though reports are still sketchy, the functionalities to be built in may include contact syncing and chat by way of the native Messages app.
The Facebook for iPhone app claims 34,391,643 “active users” as of this writing. If these stats are reasonably accurate, the app is therefore one of the most commonly used on the iPhone, and so it would make sense for both Apple and Facebook to leverage that. Android already allows you to sync Facebook contacts into its unified message system, so expect that functionality at a minimum. Apple is unlikely to just play copycat with Android, however – especially given that Android engineer Erick Tseng will be starting as head of Mobile Products at Facebook next week.
